To the first peoples of North America a totem is not a decoration: it is the spirit that chooses a person, and then guides them for the rest of their life. That is the name Vince Bruzzese chose in Montreal in 1987 — a mathematics teacher and a music lover — when he decided that the loudspeaker he was searching for was not for sale, and would have to be worked out and built by ear. Joenit found the result at CES in Las Vegas in 1995: a small pair of monitors doing something their size did not explain — not a specification, but a stirring of the soul. Joenit has carried Totem into the Benelux and France ever since, and the arithmetic has never changed: the cabinet is a component, not a container; drivers and crossovers are built to the design, not ordered from a catalogue; a model stays in the range for as long as it is the right answer, and after nearly forty years Vince still does the designing. Joenit's part is unchanged too: making sure you can hear a pair, properly set up, before you buy — because a Totem is a bridge to higher musical awareness, and you do not cross it on paper.
